How to Run a Full Security Scan on Your Windows PC (And What to Do If It Finds Something)

Most Houston homeowners have antivirus software but have never actually run a full scan. Here's exactly how to do it, what the results mean, and what to do if something is found.

Why "Having Antivirus" Isn't Enough

Windows comes with Microsoft Defender built in, and it's actually quite good. But there's a difference between antivirus software that's *installed* and antivirus that's actively protecting you. Most people have never opened the app, never verified it's up to date, and never run a full system scan. If that's you, this guide walks you through the whole process in about 20 minutes.

Step 1 — Make Sure Windows Defender Is On

Before scanning, confirm your protection is actually active:

1. Click the Start button and type "Windows Security"

2. Open Windows Security

3. Click Virus & threat protection

4. You should see a green checkmark and the message "No action needed"

If you see a yellow or red warning instead, click the alert and follow the instructions to turn protection back on. This is more common than people realize — sometimes a third-party antivirus trial expires and disables Defender in the process.

Step 2 — Update Virus Definitions

Your antivirus is only as good as its latest threat database. Definitions need to be current to catch new malware:

1. In the Virus & threat protection screen, scroll down to Virus & threat protection updates

2. Click Check for updates

3. Let it download and apply any available updates

4. Wait for the process to complete before scanning

This step is critical. An outdated definition database can miss threats that were discovered last week.

Step 3 — Run a Full Scan (Not a Quick Scan)

The "Quick Scan" that Windows runs automatically only checks the most common infection locations. A Full Scan checks every file on your computer. It takes longer (30 minutes to several hours depending on your drive size), but it's far more thorough.

1. In Virus & threat protection, click Scan options

2. Select Full scan

3. Click Scan now

4. Let your PC run — don't shut it down mid-scan

5. You can use your computer normally while it scans, but it may run slower

Tip: Run this overnight or while you're out. Schedule it to repeat monthly under Scheduled scans.

Step 4 — Understanding the Results

When the scan finishes, you'll see one of three outcomes:

✅ No threats found — Great. Your computer is clean as of this scan. Set a monthly reminder to do it again.

⚠️ Threats quarantined — Defender found something and automatically isolated it. Review what was found, then click Remove to permanently delete the quarantined files. Most of the time, this is the end of it.

🚨 Threats that need action — Some threats require manual steps to remove. Defender will walk you through them. If you're not confident in what you're being asked to do, stop here and get help — taking the wrong action can sometimes make things worse.

Step 5 — Run a Second Opinion Scan

No single antivirus catches everything. After Defender finishes, run a free scan with Malwarebytes (free version) for a second opinion:

1. Download from malwarebytes.com (the free version is sufficient)

2. Install and run a Threat Scan

3. Remove anything it finds

Malwarebytes specializes in detecting adware, spyware, and potentially unwanted programs that traditional antivirus sometimes misses.

Warning Signs Your PC May Be Infected

Even between scans, watch for these red flags:

  • Slower than usual — especially at startup or when opening programs
  • Browser redirecting to unexpected sites or showing extra ads
  • Unfamiliar programs in your taskbar or startup list
  • Antivirus disabled and you didn't turn it off
  • Ransom messages or locked files — stop what you're doing immediately
  • High CPU or disk activity when the computer appears idle

If you notice any of these, run a scan immediately and don't use the computer for online banking or anything sensitive until it's been cleared.

What Antivirus Can't Protect Against

Antivirus software is an important layer of defense, but it doesn't cover everything:

  • Network-level attacks targeting your router or other devices on your network
  • Phishing that tricks you into voluntarily giving up credentials
  • Zero-day exploits — attacks using brand-new vulnerabilities not yet in the database
  • Infected devices connected to your home network (smart TVs, cameras, tablets)

That's why professional network security — like a Firewalla device — adds a separate layer that monitors the entire network, not just one PC.
